Data Science in Radio Astronomy II - Teaching Resources

In this second module of the Data Science in Radio Astronomy series, students explore the transmission from the furthest human-made object from Earth, Voyager 1. Using a recorded dataset of the Voyager 1 signal captured by the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope, students will gain hands on experience in key data science topics such as signal processing, data visualization, noise reduction techniques, automated peak detection, and more. The lab is split into two parts. First, using GNU Radio Companion, students will build the signal processing flowgraph to visualize and enhance the weak signal. Then, using a guided Jupyter Notebook, students will conduct further analysis of the signal. Below you will find the recorded datasets, GNU Radio Companion flowgraph, and Jupyter Notebook.
